Worry Free Wednesdays – The Worry Cure – Part III

Have you ever noticed that it’s easier to make a change by adding a new activity rather than subtracting an old one?  For example, if I want to slim down it’s easier for me to get up and take a walk than to decide to eat less and just stare at an empty plate. Budgeting is hard not because I have to become a savvy shopper but due to all the times I can’t shop at all.

Giving up habits, even negative ones, is hard.  Leaving worry behind is also difficult to do, but God has a way.

Four Essential Steps to a Worry-Free Life.

Recognize

Respond

Release

Replace

Up to this point, (click here) we have discussed the first two steps to a worry-free life. It begins simply, by just recognizing that there is a better way.  We then follow that acknowledgment with prayer, asking God what He would have us do.

Unfortunately, you and I have probably done that a million times and gone right back to worrying as soon as the prayer was done. We are trying to subtract out habitual worry but we are adding nothing in its place. Nature abhors a vacuum.

This brings us to the third step of God’s worry cure as it is found in Philippians 4:6-7. Can you find it?

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Step Three – Release

God has graciously given us something to add in place of our worry.  We are to thank Him for all He has done.

Just imagine the benefits.

As we begin to recall what He has done in the past, the many times that He has provided divine rescue, all the blessings that fill our daily lives, before we know it our hearts will begin to swell with thanksgiving and faith.

He is faithful.

He has never let us down.

He will always provide.

He loves us and never leaves us alone.

In fact, He has done so much for us that no matter how big your worry, the list of specific provisions will outlast it every time.

It’s not enough to look worry in the eye and just say ‘no.’ Instead, beat worry away by praising your All-Generous God. That is a cure that is sure to work.

Be worry free today:

Search your heart and identify each specific need.

Write that need (with as little or much detail as you would like) in the comment box below.

Pray (proseuche) thanking God that He is able to provide all you need. Ask (supplication/deemis) specifically for what you need and for the request in the comment box right above yours.

(Optional) You may also include the Scripture promise that God has laid on your heart to encourage you in this situation.

Click the submit button knowing that your worry has been entrusted to the Lord and He will respond to it in the wisest, most loving way possible.

Walk away and leave that worry behind for the entire day. God’s got you covered.

Why  don’t you also eave a small list of things you are thankful for today in the comment box below. It will encourage all of our hearts.

The Prayer Chair – Part III

by Kim Avery

It’s big. It’s brown.  It’s ugly. And it’s mine. My new prayer chair has arrived, and I am thrilled.

As soon as I began shopping for my new prayer chair an obstacle emerged. In my old office, I had a large space that the prayer chair could fill, a space large enough for me to sprawl out in prayerful ease (or to fall asleep as I’ve occasionally been known to do.)

This wider expanse allowed me to choose my beloved seat from thousands of couches, love seats, and double wide chairs, each more attractive than the last. It was sheer bliss lining up the contestants and crowning the winning one.

Trouble Ahead

Alas, my new smaller space demands that my chair be an actual chair. Have you ever tried to sprawl (sleep) in a chair? It can turn even the most godly woman into a stiff-necked beast.

Now, I don’t give up on ‘cute’ easily. And so after scouring the internet I discovered a recliner that seemed to fit the bill. Unfortunately, in person the color was a distinct mix of pea green and bizarre yellow giving the chair it a distinctly ghastly glow. And despite it claims to the contrary it was about as comfortable as a wooden church pew.

The search continued with disappointing results. They were…

too orthopedic or

too pink or

too masculine.

Exhausted I drove to the one store where I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt comfortable chairs existed. La-z-y Boy.

And they did. They were soft enough to comfort a grieving heart. They rocked so as to soothe an anxious soul. They reclined so that I could indeed lay down with ease. But they were ugly. No matter how hard they try to disguise it, La-z-y Boy chairs look a lot like La-z-y Boy chairs.

Indecision

Deep sigh.

Right there in the middle of the store, I plopped myself down into the most comfortable chair and had a talk with Jesus.  And I kid you not, this verse came to my mind.  “…and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.” Isaiah 53:2 Apparently, Jesus wasn’t attractive outwardly but He is certainly beautiful to you and me.

So is my new prayer chair and I can’t wait to meet Jesus there.

My Prayer Chair ~ No More…

by Kim Avery

My prayer chair – for years, Jesus and I have met in this special place. My deepest sorrows have all been witnessed by its tear-stained colors and a Savior who cares. The fabric has laughed with me making the very fringe dance, and the cushions bear the indent of deep intercessory prayer.

I love this chair. Together we have lived a life as lovers of God. But no more…

No More

Sadly, as I moved books and phones, furniture and files, pictures and plants into the much smaller office at our new house old faithful didn’t fit.  Oh, I tried. I squeezed it into the corner until it literally overlapped the desk. I placed it in front of the window blocking out the light of the sun. I angled her in front of the shelves until she literally covered the door.  But no amount of effort could help the old girl squeeze in and call this room home.

I went to bed and cried.

Could It Be?

This morning, the voice of reason (also known as my husband, Ron) suggested that this new chapter in my life was inviting a new chair of prayer. The thought intrigues me and the traitorous possibility is niggling away inside.

Of course, THE prayer chair will always be a part of my heart and will NOT be given away. This force of nature shall remain as a part of my home (somewhere? hopefully?).

Ron graciously offered to host her in his very own office down the hall. Hah! As if its laughing fringe could hold the prayers of a masculine heart.

I settled on the bedroom instead, and there she grandly awaits the prayers of each morning and each night to be held in her uplifted arms.

What To Do?

But for the sunlit minutes lived out in my office as I work there all day there stands a hole longing to be filled.  What should I do? Can my chair be replaced? Will my prayers ever be heard again?

If only there were an altar of prayer sitting in my office right now, I would curl my grieving heart up and ask Jesus what He wanted me to do. But my prayer chair is no more…

To be continued…

Did you know that God is a Master Interpreter?

by Melody Jo Hamor

The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. Romans 8:26 (NLT)

Some of my most passionate, heart felt prayers start out with, “Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!” What’s the English translation for that, you might ask? Well, it’s something along the lines of, “GOD HELP ME! I CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU!”

Seriously though, I have days that I feel like I’m going to explode! There’s just so much being asked of me and I’m overwhelmed. Some days it feels as if I’m defeated before I even get started. Basically, my work load is weighing me down and there are moments when I don’t even know where to start. Okay, so maybe that’s just the life of a full time college student who’s also a full time wife, homemaker, volunteer, fill-in-the-blank, and I ought to just suck it up, get over it, and get on with it. Let’s see – have you ever felt more equipped to take on the day once someone has said to you, “Just get over it?” No? :) Hmmm…somehow I’m not surprised.

I absolutely cannot get through my day and my to-do list without the Lord’s help. But sometimes when I pray about these things, my mind is flooded with so much angst that I don’t even know what to ask for. Do I pray for the Lord to help me get it done, to help me learn to delegate, to help me say “No” more often, to take on fewer tasks, to what?! This Scripture in Romans 8 reassures me that my groaning and pleading is heard by God, and that the Spirit prays for me in groanings as well. The Lord knows what I need even before I ask Him (see Matthew 6:8). I don’t have to know the perfect prayer, the perfect solution, the perfect words… I just need to know the One who is – the One who bends down to hear and answer my prayers. In that case, “Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!” isn’t such a crazy way to start a conversation with God. :)  He’s pleased just to hear me say that I need Him. He’s pleased that I want to sit with Him for a while and listen for His answer in my heart. He’s pleased to know that I love Him and trust Him.

Lord, I know You hear me when I’m groaning for Your help. Thank You for always listening to my needs, and providing for them, even when I’m not sure what they are. Please help me to do my best and please rescue me from anything that will hinder my efforts. I need Your help to be a woman of excellence. Please make Your path clear for me to follow. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

What Box Have You Put God In?

by Susan Fleming

There’s no rule that says
GOD can only deliver by using a big army.
No one can stop GOD from saving
when he sets his mind to it.
1 Samuel 14:6 (MSG)

Houses don’t sell in just one day. Not in this economy, anyway. But God isn’t limited by the “rules” of selling a house, or by the economy. He has His own rules and His own economy, and by golly if He wants to sell something in one day, then He does it.

And He did. Our place in Pennsylvania has been on the market for about a year and a half. During that time, we’ve had two roller coaster rides through sales that fell through. The market in that area is very sluggish, and our Realtor was not encouraging at all.

Then, last Friday, he called about 9:30 in the morning and said there was somebody interested — they had made an offer.

Yeah, yeah — whatever. Sigh.

He called back at noon and said they wanted to close at 3:30. THAT DAY!

Wow! Really?? Keep me posted!

He called back at 5:15 and said our money was in the bank. Double Wow!

Does God always do things like that? No. But His timing is always perfect (even if we can’t quite see the perfection in it), and His ability to save is unlimited.

What’s hanging over you today? Tell God about it. And tell Him about it again. And again. And again, until HE tells you to stop asking. He loves to hear your voice, and He IS at work, always.
