For Better or Worse ~ Made to Crave Ch6A

For better or for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health… these are the vows of fidelity I took over 30 years ago on my wedding day. In those years, Ron and I have experienced all of the above.

As I stood in the chapel draped in my beaded white gown that day, my “I do” was more than just a one time decision that had no real impact on my life. I was consenting to follow my man no matter where, no matter what. My life would forever be intertwined with his.

Having a happy marriage has involved some real sacrifices on both our parts over the years, but I can confidently say, it was worth it.

Lifestyle Change

It’s popular these days to talk about making a decision for Christ. And nothing you ever do will be more important than that. But a relationship with God is also more than that. This decision not only changes your eternal address but your daily living as well.

I was struck by one of our verses for Chapter Six today. Luke 9:23 says, Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

Deny ourselves – take up our cross – daily – follow Him. These are powerful words. Convicting. Compelling. Inviting.

Full or Hungry

I want to walk closer with my God. I’ve already made that decision. Now, for better or for worse, whether full or hungry, eating cake or carrots, since I’ve already pre-agreed to follow Him wherever He goes, my daily lifestyle will be changed.

Self-denial is not fun, but there is no doubt He is worth it! I am so thankful that my life is now forever intertwined with His.

  2. I love this reminder of commitment, Kim. It’s true-sometimes in marriage there are times when clinging to the promise we made is the only way through. I like the analogy between that and this promise that we’re making to God.

  3. Being single, I rarely have to compromise with another to make living in the same home more amicable. Its difficult for me to deny myself. I’m so used to saying yes to whatever I want…I make all the decisions.

It takes making a conscious decision daily to ask “Is this what God wants, or what I want?” “Are you following Christ, or your own desires?”
