When your toilet overflows, you call a plumber. When threatened with a lawsuit, a lawyer is your new best friend. And when physical symptoms in your body raise a red flag, off to the doctor you go.
No one LIKES spending time and money on pipes, lawsuits or physicians. We would rather be at the mall. But there are times in all our lives when we need expert help in specialized areas.
Emotional issues are no different. In this chapter on Emotional Eating Lysa wisely said, “Often these issues are big and complicated and a bit like peeling back the layers of an onion. Just when you think you’ve tackled a piece of it, you realize there are many layers yet to go.”
The truth is at times our main problem is that we have issues with food. At other times, our issues with food point to the fact that we have an unresolved problem. That’s when it’s time to get some expert help.
The Bible agrees. Here are just a few short verses reminding us of the wisdom of seeking expert help and support.
A wise man will hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.
Proverbs 1:5
Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser,
Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning.
Proverbs 9:9
Where there is no guidance the people fall,
But in abundance of counselors there is victory.
Proverbs 11:14
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.
Proverbs 12:15
Without consultation, plans are frustrated,
But with many counselors they succeed.
Proverbs 15:22
Listen to counsel and accept discipline,
That you may be wise the rest of your days.
Proverbs 19:20
If you could use some extra support in your journey to greater health, what kind of help might be best for you? Both counseling and coaching are great places to look.
As a Licensed Therapist and a Professional Certified Coach, I am often asked about the difference between the two.
Therapy and counseling focus on diagnosing, treating and healing the hurt and brokenness that occurred in the past.
Coaching focuses on your current life, your plans for the future, goal setting and seeing the possibilities that lay ahead.
There are time in all our lives when we need a little extra help. If you are discouraged and feeling as if the obstacles are just too great to overcome, I would encourage you to pray and ask the Lord what He would have you do.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Hello Kim,
I will be contacting you very soon is the offer still open? I know its been a while but looking forward to your mentor-ship thanks!
Kim, thank you for the useful clarification and the permission to step into counseling or coaching any where the need arises. life is complicated and so are we! Lysa’s transparency in this area of the journey is so much a blessing to those of us who have isolation issues and who may also have experienced connection failure with Jesus. There are layers to this freedom seeking. I think of it like coming out of prison or bondage as the Isrealites did…sollitary confinement, then personal cell then general population, then out in the yard …these are degrees of freedom but still one is not free. It is when one walks out the prison door and does not look back that one is finally free. That’s what Jesus does and did for us…set the captives free. I belive that counseling and coaching move us along to freedom when it is Christ centered. God bless you, Kim.
Hi Bella,
Wow - what a powerful picture of a prisoner slowing gaining more freedom versus being totally free. That’s awesome.
I’m so glad that you are hanging in here for the whole journey.
May God richly bless you as you draw closer and closer to Him.
Kim
