Forgiveness Will Set You Free
If you are breathing and you are reading this today, you have been hurt by someone at some point in your life. People hurt people. We just do. Some of those offenses may be small, unintended, and forgettable. But there are other, bigger hurts, too. You may have been intentionally, repeatedly, and unforgettably wounded by someone who was supposed to care for you and treat you with love.
Yet, in the midst of our intense pain, while still dealing with the ongoing consequences of horrific sin, Jesus teaches us to pray, Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors Matthew 6:12 (NIV).
Why? The truth of the matter is this, if there were no God, unforgiveness would make perfect sense. They have done terrible things, the pain we feel can never be undone, they haven’t even said that they were sorry, and they just don’t deserve to be forgiven. This would be true, if there were no God.
But there is a God and this God commands you and me, the injured ones, to forgive those who have horribly sinned against us. Why? Among other things, He commands this because He is thinking of you.
You see, Scripture is clear. God Himself, will deal with those who have injured you.
God will discipline believers (Hebrews 12:9-10) and pour out wrath on all those who never repent. Knowing that the offender is in His hands, He then urges you to, “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord (Romans 12:19).
The offender’s destiny is in God’s hands. By commanding you to forgive, God is looking out for you. Unforgiveness doesn’t hurt the offender… it hurts you. Carrying around your bitterness weighs you down, clouds your relationship with God, and blocks your ability to love others. Unforgiveness settles into your heart like a spiritual cancer and will eat you alive from the inside out. It is like drinking poison and hoping the other person will die.
God knows your pain. He feels your hurt, and so He says to you. “Because I love you, because I know what unforgiveness will do to you, you must forgive.”
Forgiveness will set you free. Free to love, free to live. Jesus loves YOU and because He loves you, He asks you and empowers you to freely forgive.
