Faith First

I love my car. It’s about 2 years old and it has never let me down. It starts every morning, turns on a dime, and will roll over anything in its path. It is very cool.

Trust

But I’ve noticed with my car that there are two essentials that must exist for it to get me from here to there. First, I have to trust it.

It’s not enough for me to look at my car, wash it, admire it, and house it in my garage. I still can’t go to the grocery store. For the little red Hummer to get me where I want to go, I have to faith in it. I have to get it and turn the key.

That is the first essential, totally non-negotiable element in moving from here to there.

Faith first.

Faith is also the foundational element in Christian living. Faith is how I entered the kingdom of God, For by grace you have been saved through faith… Ephesians 2:8 (NASB) and faith is how I live every day of the Christian life. Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him. Colossians 2:6 (NASB)

It is not enough to admire Jesus, talk about Jesus, and worship Jesus. I have to have faith – to do what He says, whether I understand it or not.

Faith In Action

I need to trust Him when He calls me to spend an afternoon with someone, even when I am behind at work. Faith says that when I am slandered, I will not slander back. Only trust in God allows me to say ‘no’ to a wonderful party to spend more time with my kids. Faith is what energizes me to serve someone who will never serve me back.

Faith is the conduit between God’s call and the realization of His promises.

Supernatural Power

The second essential element in getting from here to there in my car is fuel. I have to fill that gas tank up. My car, as great as it is, won’t run just because I want it to. It needs fuel.

And in our Christian life first we have to have faith in our faithful God, but we can’t just walk away and gut this out this life on our own. We need fuel. We need power. Jesus said, …apart from Me you can do nothing. John 15:5 (NASB).

To get anywhere in our spiritual lives, we need to trust that God will do what He says He will do, and rely on His Spirit for the power to accomplish what He has called us to do. With these two simple steps, we can live the glorious, fruitful life that we are called to live.
