Power to Love
Have you ever noticed that some people are just harder to love than others? Some are unreasonable, others ungrateful, many are mean, and some are just downright strange. As one of Charlie Brown’s friends so pointedly said, “I love mankind, it’s people I can’t stand.”
Love As God Loves
That is why it is so sobering to read the following command from our Lord, A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another John 13:34 (NASB). We are to love others with the same extravagant, relentless, unconditional love with which God loves us.
But have you ever noticed, how hard it is to be kind to those who are rude, how tough it is to be patient with reckless drivers, and how so often it is even difficult to love those closest to our hearts? How in the world are we ever going to love anyone, and everyone, with the love of God?
Thankfully, the answer comes back, we can do this because Jesus has promised to do it for us and through us.
God Is Love
I John 4:8 says, that God is love, and I Corinthians 13 gives us a beautiful description of what that love looks like: Love is patient, love is kind, love does not envy… An incredible and powerful picture emerges when you put those two concepts together: God is love and He is also the very definition of love. This is the result:
God is patient,
God is kind.
God does not envy,
God does not boast,
God is not proud.
God is not rude,
God is not self-seeking,
God is not easily angered,
God keeps no record of wrongs.
God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
God always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
God Loves Through Us
This amazing God who calls me to love is the same amazing God who indwells me with that love, His love.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live,
but Christ lives in me.
Galatians 2:20 (NIV)
The power to love is all His. Whether people are kind or mean, Jesus Christ will love them through you and me.
