31 Day Devotional Challenge

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

by Kim Avery

I love Jesus. He saved me, cleansed me, rescued me, and then took His perfect record and credited it to my account. He lives in me, intercedes for me, strengthens, equips, changes, and transforms me. Jesus talks to me, works through me, and is building a new home in heaven for me. I could go on all day and so could you. He is everything.

And like the Apostle Paul, I want to know Him more. That’s why I am inviting you to join me, beginning May 1st, in the 31 Day Devotional Challenge. It doesn’t get any better than this. Imagine 31 days of soaking in His Word, saturating ourselves with His presence, and then carrying His fragrance everywhere we go.

It’s fun, it’s easy, and it will change your life.

Here’s how it will work:

31 Day Devotional Challenge

  • Read a passage from the Bible each day.
  • Ask and answer three questions about that passage: What did I learn about God? What did I learn about me? What difference does it make in my life?
  • Encourage others by posting what you read, and if you want, something that you learned from your reading at www.facebook.com/christianwomen .
  • Inquire in prayer what God would have you do with what you learned.
  • Obey.
  • Sign-up. There is an optional sign-up list for those who would like to receive a daily email reminder and word of encouragement each day of the challenge. Simply type your name and email in the contact box at the bottom of this post and you will begin receiving your daily words of encouragement on May 1st.

FAQ’s

What if I’m not able to participate for all 31 days? If you have to miss a day (or 10, or more), that’s okay. If you begin late, no problem. If you decide to not complete the challenge, no big deal. This challenge is grace-infused and designed solely to be a tool of encouragement in your walk with the Lord.

Where in the Bible am I supposed to read? You can read any passage of any length from the Bible version of your choice.

Can I read a devotional book instead of directly from the Bible? While you are certainly welcome to use a devotional book to accompany your Bible reading, this particular challenge is to read directly from God’s Word.

What if I don’t know where in the Bible to read? The Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke or John are always a great place to begin. Another option is to read a chapter of Proverbs every day as there are 31 chapters and that will easily fit into the format of our challenge.

How long will it take each day? You can spend as much or as little time as you feel led to take, but make sure you leave time to interact with the Lord over the three questions.

What if I disagree with the way others interpret Scripture? The point of the 31 Day Devotional Challenge is for each of us to grow in our personal relationship with the Lord. We ask you not to comment on issues that are controversial or ‘debatable’ amongst other believers. We ask you not to use this challenge as a place to discuss doctrinal issues. While all of Scripture is important, those issues are best discussed within your own church and postings of that nature will have to lovingly be removed.

Well, that’s it. If you have any additional questions, just write them in the comment box and I’ll try to answer them.

What do you think? Do you want to love Jesus more? Would you like to join us as we grow closer to the Lord through 31 days of intention?

Simply add your first name and email address below to receive 31 days of email encouragement during our Devotional Challenge beginning May 1st.

Multi-tasking Mania

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

by Kim Avery

Pop Quiz: My laptop is running, the email alert is on, my Bible’s open, and the Daytimer’s out. I am eating, drinking, listening to make sure my son wakes up, glancing at today’s files, and kissing my husband goodbye. What am I doing?

Devotions.

Yep. I’m ashamed to admit it but there are times when my devotions aren’t exactly, well, ‘devoted.’

Multi-tasking Mama

Encarta Dictionary says that ‘to devote’ means “to commit yourself to, or allot or use something for, a particular activity, aim, or purpose.” Done right, ‘devotions,’ is to be a single-minded time when all my attention is committed to God.

Enter the 21st century. Unlike the simple sheep-herders of old, who had hours to wile away in the fields at night, I am a sophisticated, multi-dimensional, multi-tasking machine. After all, I’m a woman.

I can hold the baby, stir the pot, watch TV, and chat on the cell phone without a conscious thought.

But therein lies the problem, communing with and hearing from my God, requires thought.

What the Research Says

Smart men and women in white lab coats has been studying multi-tasking for decades and their research consistently says the same thing. You can’t. You can’t multi-task. While you are paying attention to one thing, you are automatically not paying attention to something else.

No, you don’t have to give up walking and chewing gum at the same time. But, if any degree of learning, attending, devoting, and/or memory is desired the old adage still applies, do ‘one thing at a time.’ (You can see their exact findings here: http://chronicle.com/article/Scholars-Turn-Their-Attention/63746/ )

What God Says

Nothing is more important to me than my relationship with the God of the universe. Nothing.

There is no more important activity in my crazy-busy day than checking in with the One who knows beforehand what this day will hold.

Staring at the beauty of Christ is worthy of all the attention and worship I have to give.

And even without wearing a white lab coat, God knew this all along, which is why His voice is ringing strong in my ears,

Be still, and know and I am God. Psalm 46:10.

I hope you will excuse me for a minute. I need to power off my laptop, shut the door, and close my Daytimer so that I can devote myself to God.

How About You?

While I am away, I would love to hear from you. What kinds of things have interrupted your devotional times with God?

Please take a minute and share your thoughts in the comment section below.
