Laryngitis – “It’s Baaaack”

by Kim Avery

“They’re baaaack,” or so the corny line from the 3rd rate horror movie goes, and it’s true. Well, almost. It would be more accurate to say, “It’s baaaack,” as in that virulent  case of laryngitis that stole three months of my life this past spring. Three months.

Crazy, isn’t it? I mean who has ever heard of a case of laryngitis stalking someone like a hungry shark on a summer day? And not just someone but a very talkative woman?  And not just a woman but a Life Coach who spends her days talking ON THE PHONE? And if I were to be really honest, I wonder why speechlessness is dogging not just a female Life Coach who makes her living talking on the phone, but why is it chasing me!?

Joy Is Good

You see, I am all about joy. I like being happy. I’m quick to smile. And I avoid elective pain at all costs. In Kim’s world, joy is good; suffering is bad.

Suffering Seems Bad

Unfortunately, that rule of thumb doesn’t bode well for those who live in a world filled with brokenness, death, disease, and pain. If my mood were dependant on the things that happen around me and to me, I might as well give up now.

But it doesn’t.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

in this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory…

I Peter 1:3-9

I have been born again, and I have a living hope  > My hope comes from the resurrection of Jesus Christ  > Trials will come but they can’t threaten what Christ has given  > By believing in Him, I can rejoice with joy that is literally inexpressible. Good thing it’s inexpressible, since I can’t talk again :) .

No matter what, joy is mine.

Trust me, you will never catch me loving pain. I don’t run towards trials. And I will absolutely pray, “Lord, if it’s Your will, may this trial quickly pass.” But in the meantime, I’m planning to fight for joy every time, because I am His, and He is mine.

I’m praying for joy in this current trial today. How can I pray for you?

The Power of a Smile

I had a migraine headache all weekend. Between the pounding, throbbing, nausea, and sensitivity to any and all stimuli, it wasn’t one of my better weekends.  But as I lay in bed, I began thinking about some research that had recently come out regarding the power of a smile.

This study revealed that a smile does more than reflect your mood, it can actually work from the outside-in to change it. A simple smile is more powerful than you think.

Read what I learned:

1. Smiling Improves Your Mood – We all know that when we are happy, we smile.  But did you know that the reverse is also true? When you’re feeling down, smile and often the rest of you will follow suit.

2. Smiling Helps You Make Friends – A frown, grimace, or scowl will automatically push people away.  But a smile draws people in and allows you to connect.

3. Smiling Reduces Stress – Next time you are stressed, pause and take time to put a smile on your face. Often this will allow you to think more clearly, stress less, and move into action.

4. Smiling Lowers Blood Pressure – If you want to see a quick, measureable difference in your blood pressure, smile for a minute and watch what happens.

5. Smiling Kicks Your Immune System Into Gear – Prevent colds, chase away the flu, and improve your overall immunity with the power of a smile.

6. Smiling Feels Good – When you smile endorphins are released making you feel good.

7. Smiling Catches On – Next time you are in a group of people flash your winning smile and others will join in.  Smiling is contagious.

With all those amazing benefits, in spite of my migraine, I decided to give it a try.  You know what, I believe it helped.

What can smiling do for you?

Worry Free Wednesdays – The Worry Cure – Part III

Have you ever noticed that it’s easier to make a change by adding a new activity rather than subtracting an old one?  For example, if I want to slim down it’s easier for me to get up and take a walk than to decide to eat less and just stare at an empty plate. Budgeting is hard not because I have to become a savvy shopper but due to all the times I can’t shop at all.

Giving up habits, even negative ones, is hard.  Leaving worry behind is also difficult to do, but God has a way.

Four Essential Steps to a Worry-Free Life.

Recognize

Respond

Release

Replace

Up to this point, (click here) we have discussed the first two steps to a worry-free life. It begins simply, by just recognizing that there is a better way.  We then follow that acknowledgment with prayer, asking God what He would have us do.

Unfortunately, you and I have probably done that a million times and gone right back to worrying as soon as the prayer was done. We are trying to subtract out habitual worry but we are adding nothing in its place. Nature abhors a vacuum.

This brings us to the third step of God’s worry cure as it is found in Philippians 4:6-7. Can you find it?

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Step Three – Release

God has graciously given us something to add in place of our worry.  We are to thank Him for all He has done.

Just imagine the benefits.

As we begin to recall what He has done in the past, the many times that He has provided divine rescue, all the blessings that fill our daily lives, before we know it our hearts will begin to swell with thanksgiving and faith.

He is faithful.

He has never let us down.

He will always provide.

He loves us and never leaves us alone.

In fact, He has done so much for us that no matter how big your worry, the list of specific provisions will outlast it every time.

It’s not enough to look worry in the eye and just say ‘no.’ Instead, beat worry away by praising your All-Generous God. That is a cure that is sure to work.

Be worry free today:

Search your heart and identify each specific need.

Write that need (with as little or much detail as you would like) in the comment box below.

Pray (proseuche) thanking God that He is able to provide all you need. Ask (supplication/deemis) specifically for what you need and for the request in the comment box right above yours.

(Optional) You may also include the Scripture promise that God has laid on your heart to encourage you in this situation.

Click the submit button knowing that your worry has been entrusted to the Lord and He will respond to it in the wisest, most loving way possible.

Walk away and leave that worry behind for the entire day. God’s got you covered.

Why  don’t you also eave a small list of things you are thankful for today in the comment box below. It will encourage all of our hearts.

Be All That God Created You To Be ~ More Goals to Consider

by Kim Avery

Jump start your week by prayerfully pondering some more of the things that God may be calling you to as you engage in His transformation process.

Each Tuesday on Transformed on Tuesdays you will learn how to become more and more the woman God created you to be. Then, you can drop by each weekend to find a short list of ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Some of the ideas won’t be for you but others will be just what God has in mind.

Begin today to be all that God created you to be. Imagine the possibilities. You could…

Walk your talk.

Pray for others as you’ve told them you would.

Make Christ your sure foundation instead of trusting in your own strength or plans.

Add value to every conversation you have.

Identify and use your spiritual gifts.

Stop hesitating when God is calling you to do something.

Stop procrastinating. Today.

Do your ‘to-do’ list.

Communicate better by expanding your vocabulary.

Stop complaining.

True transformation is hard. Changing the habits of a lifetime takes prayer, planning, practice, self-forgiveness when you fall short, and the ability to make adjustments along the way. Many women find change easier with the help, encouragement, support, accountability, and wisdom of a life coach walking by their side. Consider taking a minute to explore how life coaching can help you.

What change are you going to begin incorporating into your life today?

Frugal Friday: Necessity or Luxury?

by Mary O. Moss

Do I need it or do I want it? Is it really necessary? These are questions I have become accustomed to asking myself!

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21 NIV).

Several years ago, my questions were about more expensive, less “necessary” items. My husband and I have always lived well below our means and it’s a good thing! About three years ago, we were caught up in the “economic downturn” and have never rebounded fully.

What this meant was that we needed to dig pretty deeply into our frugal living toolbox! It also meant—and continues to mean—we continually redefine what we need, what we want, what we can splurge on and what is absolutely non-negotiable in terms of how we spend our money.

Non-negotiable? No traditional family vacations. Non-negotiable? No new car. Non-negotiable? No new furniture. Non-negotiable? No cable TV.

Splurge? Birthday celebrations, eating out once in a while, going to a concert or other activity in the community, inviting friends over for a cookout or dinner and dessert.

We’re not the only ones in this situation! For so many of us tough economic times have eliminated—or severely limited—luxuries such as spa visits and satellite TV, vacation trips, backyard pool installation and perhaps even a college education. Those dreams have been replaced by more pressing needs: food, clothing and health care.

A Pew telephone survey, conducted in 2006 asked the “Luxury or Necessity?” question about 14 different popular consumer product. The survey was among a randomly-selected nationally-representative sample of 2,000 adults. Survey respondents placed the 14 items on a very broad range along the “necessity” scale — with a high of 91% describing a car as a necessity and a low of 3% saying the same about an iPod.

Age and income of respondents made a big difference in responses overall and specifically, in how they viewed home computers, high-speed internet access and cell phones. Income level also affected attitudes toward the dishwasher and the car air conditioner—more income equals these two items viewed as “necessities”.

Among respondents, and I suspect for each of us, there will be difference in our perception of necessity vs. luxury. The ages of our children or our stage in life or career can dictate that list sometimes—and often it changes over time. It’s a personal choice for each of us.

Life doesn’t come with many promises we can count on—no matter how hard we work, no matter how well we treat our neighbors. Even good, devout Christians can experience hardship and financial stress. (Consider Job!)

There is one promise, though that we can trust in completely and absolutely: “The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 1:14 NIV).
