What’s Shaking in Your Life?

by Susan Fleming

What mountains have been removed in your life?  What hills are shaking?  Jesus told us that in this life there will be tribulation and distress.  Hard times will surely come.  And if nothing is shaking in your world today, it will one of these days.

“For the mountains may be removed
and the hills may shake,
But My lovingkindness will not be removed from you,
And My covenant of peace will not be shaken,”
Says the Lord who has compassion on you.

Isaiah 54:10

We know that Jesus has overcome the world and has triumphed over sin and death.  But what does that do for me today?  Now, in my circumstances?  When my mountains are removed and my hills shake?

“Another tropical storm has formed…”
“The devastation is widespread…”
“There were no survivors…”
“I’m sorry.  We did all we could…”
“I don’t love you anymore…”

I’ll tell you what it means to me.  Through Jesus Christ, God has opened up a way for me to be in fellowship with Him. And wonder of wonders, He loves me!  No matter what difficulties arise in my life, no matter how challenging circumstances or people become, no matter what else I lose, He still loves me.  No matter how rocky the road, how rough the seas, how rebellious my heart – He still loves me.

He says, “My lovingkindness will not be removed from you.”  His lovingkindness… His kind intent towards me, His mercy poured out on me, His grace lavished on me, His unfailing love engulfing me… never to be removed, never less because of my foolishness, never withheld because of my unfaithfulness.  “I love you,” He whispers to my heart, and I am filled with joy unspeakable.

And He says, “My covenant of peace will not be shaken.”  It’s His covenant – He designed it and initiated it and guarantees its fulfillment.  I am no longer at enmity with Him, no longer guilty of high treason, no longer condemned for my sin, but He has purchased my peace with Him at the ultimate price – the blood of His very own Son.  And I stand before Him, not just acquitted and free, but adopted and loved!

I know only a little of what that covenant means to my life, but He knows the full extent of it, the complete intent of it – and He doesn’t just live up to the part of it that I understand, but He promises to live up to the whole thing, forever.  All the ramifications that I cannot even fathom – He will see it through.  It’s a little like my friends’ adopted son – he doesn’t have a clue about the responsibilities his parents have assumed, and he has no ability to make sure he remains their son.  They don’t limit their activities on his behalf to what he thinks they should be doing – it’s much bigger than he can imagine.

We know that this world, and all that is in it, is passing away.  The mountains in our lives will be removed, and the hills will be shaken, but if you belong to God, His steadfast love will not be removed from you, and His covenant of peace will not be shaken.

What effect does God’s covenant of peace have on your heart today? Leave us a comment and let us know.

Frugal Friday: Do-it-yourself Home Repair and Maintenance

by Mary O. Moss

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to pay someone to do something I have the time and ability to do myself. Don’t get me wrong . . . we’ve learned that it can definitely be cost-effective to pay someone to do the big jobs and the jobs we know we can’t do ourselves! Experience—and not necessarily pleasant experience—has taught us the value of being realistic and knowing when to get help!

Home Depot’s website offers dozens of “how-to” tips and techniques at the How To section. Whether you need to install a ceiling fan or new faucet or plan to undertake an outdoor project, chances are Home Depot’s site can help, including tips and techniques and supply lists.

Other great on-line resources include Do It Yourself, funfacts.com home repair section as well as dozens—maybe hundreds of articles—at other sites.  Just type in the words “do it yourself” on the search bar. You’ll be amazed at how much information others are willing to share for free!

I recently discovered HandyManTeacher.com.  In addition to his personal—great—advice, Hub Kirkpatrick shares links to dozens of other great resources for the novice or the pro.

Another great way to save time and money on home maintenance and repairs is to let your friends, neighbors and coworkers know what type of project you are planning.  One of my coworkers, who formerly owned several rental properties, installed a hot water heater for us—at about ½ the cost of labor had we had a contractor do the work.

If you can’t afford to pay even half price for some of the work you want or need to have done, why not trade services or goods? Are you willing to babysit your neighbor’s children in exchange for minor home repairs to you house? Can you cook? Clean? Organize? How about serve as  a “personal shopper” or agree to run errands in exchange for an equal number of hours of labor on your home repair.

This is what community is about. When we come together to help each other solve problems and enjoy a better quality of life, everyone benefits. Maybe your neighbor or friend could use some frugal living tips and techniques. What a wonderful way to share the joy of living in abundance – on less money!

Save up all that money you won’t be spending for a nice piece of furniture or a vacation or for an emergency fund for those inevitable times when you just have to call in a professional.

“Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith” (Romans 12:4-6 NIV).

Got Your Helmet On?

by Susan Fleming

Statistics vary from state to state, and from year to year, but almost 60% of the motorcycle fatalities in the United States involved riders who were not wearing helmets. Consider these three points from NHTSA.gov:

1.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that for every 100 bikers killed while not wearing a helmet, 37 of their lives would have been saved if they were wearing a helmet.

2.  A Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) study found that motorcycle helmets are 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries and that unhelmeted motorcyclists involved in crashes were three times more likely to suffer brain injuries than those wearing helmets.

3.  A study conducted at the University of Southern California concluded that wearing helmets was the single most important factor in surviving motorcycle crashes.

And yet the controversy rages. To wear a helmet or not. The right to let your hair blow in the breeze and bugs get in your mouth… Seems pretty simple to me, but then I’m not motorcycle person, so what do I know?

But I do know about another helmet, the one Paul writes about in the book of Ephesians, the helmet of salvation.

Much of the time, Satan wages war against our minds. He lies to us. He steals our joy. He deceives us into thinking we are scum of the earth, when in reality, we are children of the King, and the bride of Christ.

You think it is dangerous to ride a motorcycle without a helmet? That’s nothing compared to the danger of cruising around without the helmet of salvation on! Don’t leave home without it!

No Such Thing As a Free Lunch

by Bethany Rutledge

You may have heard the story of Rick and Dick Hoyt. Rick is a quadriplegic since birth and an accomplished athlete who has completed over 1000 events from the Boston Marathon to the Hawaii Ironman. Dick is the vehicle that has allowed Rick to do so, pulling him in a boat during swimming events and serving as the pairs legs during the cycling and running legs. Someone who has seemingly insurmountable challenges  such as Rick has found a way to do what he dreamed of doing;  living an active life and  making an enormous difference in the lives of others with disabilities. Indeed a quote from Rick upon completing the pairs first road race  was “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped. “

Recently a thread was circulating on our triathlon club board about what to do when you know you need to train or workout but don’t feel motivated. People wrote in with all sorts of interesting ideas that ranged from consuming more caffeine to simply appreciating the health that allows them to get out and be active. The common thread running through all the suggestions was the power of choice.  Your choice.   The fact that, to a point, your health and your fitness level are up to you to decide. It is up to you to use it or lose it. It doesn’t come to anyone easy and it isn’t free, neglect it long enough and it will start to break down and fall apart, just like you would expect your car to do!

There are obviously many health situations and problems that we cannot control. Accidents, cancer and disease, as Christians we know that we are not ultimately in control. However, we are also expected to be good stewards of what we are given and I believe that includes taking care of our physical health.

The fact that we are born with this amazing machine can also make us take it for granted until something goes wrong or we gunk it up through our behavior and lifestyle choices.

How do we decide how to treat our bodies every day? Why do we take physical health for granted until something is screwed up? The fact is we appreciate what we have to work for so much more than something that we get for free. Take the example of a kid who has a million toys at home but really loves the one that he saved up for and bought with his own money. Or the kid who turns 16 and is handed the keys to a brand new car versus the one who saved for years to pick out their very own used beater! On the other side of the coin think of someone you know who is born with everything handed to them and never learned the value of hard work. How much harder it is for that person to turn into a successful and disciplined adult!

It’s the same way with our health. We are all given the most amazing machine at birth for free to do with what we choose. It is not a completely equal playing field: some of us have disabilities or disease and we all have things about our bodies we wish were different! Nevertheless,  it is easy to take health for granted …. Put in the wrong types of fuel,  failing to have regular doctor visits and exercise, and ignoring little problems that come up until they turn into big ones are just some examples of failing to keep the oil changed or not getting the 5000 mile tune-up! A story like the Hoyts puts health in perspective and makes me appreciate the good health I have to be able to walk, run or ride my bike. Whatever your own health status and situation is, try to appreciate it and don’t take it for granted!
