The Power of a Smile

I had a migraine headache all weekend. Between the pounding, throbbing, nausea, and sensitivity to any and all stimuli, it wasn’t one of my better weekends. But as I lay in bed, I began thinking about some research that had recently come out regarding the power of a smile.

This study revealed that a smile does more than reflect your mood, it can actually work from the outside-in to change it. A simple smile is more powerful than you think.

Read what I learned:

1. Smiling Improves Your Mood – We all know that when we are happy, we smile. But did you know that the reverse is also true? When you’re feeling down, smile and often the rest of you will follow suit.

2. Smiling Helps You Make Friends – A frown, grimace, or scowl will automatically push people away. But a smile draws people in and allows you to connect.

3. Smiling Reduces Stress – Next time you are stressed, pause and take time to put a smile on your face. Often this will allow you to think more clearly, stress less, and move into action.

4. Smiling Lowers Blood Pressure – If you want to see a quick, measureable difference in your blood pressure, smile for a minute and watch what happens.

5. Smiling Kicks Your Immune System Into Gear – Prevent colds, chase away the flu, and improve your overall immunity with the power of a smile.

6. Smiling Feels Good – When you smile endorphins are released making you feel good.

7. Smiling Catches On – Next time you are in a group of people flash your winning smile and others will join in. Smiling is contagious.

With all those amazing benefits, in spite of my migraine, I decided to give it a try. You know what, I believe it helped.

What can smiling do for you?
